Topic OTHER NOTABLE HISTORICAL SITES IN NIGERIA.
Objectives At the end of the lesson, the students will be able to;

  • Mention other historical site in Nigeria.
  • Describe the merits and limitation of Archaeology to the growth and development of Nigeria socialization.
Previous Knowledge Students are familiar the centres of civilization. 
Presentation Step I: She  introduces the new topic

Step II: She presents the topic using slide presentation.

Step III: She asks and welcomes questions from the student.

Step IV: She assesses the students by giving them classwork

Content OSUN-OSOGBO GROOVE

  The Osun-Oshogbo sacred groove is located along the bank of Osun river in Osogbo local government Area of Osun State, South Western Nigeria

It is a sacred groove in a sacred forest that forms part of Yoruba cultural tradition. It is the domicile of Osun, the Yoruba goddess of fertility. 

   The site consists of 40 shrines, 2 palaces, many sculptures and other works of art. The Osun groove was declared world heritage site by United Nations Educational, Scientific and cultural Organization (UNESCO) on 15 July, 2005.

It has become major tourist attraction both to the local and international users. It could become e major source of income to the state government.

THE MERITS OF ARCHAEOLOGY TO THE GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT OF NIGERIA SOCIALIZATION

  1. Artefacts of great value were attributed to indigenous works.
  1. It brought global attention to the historical sites such as Osun-Osogbo groove, Esie-soap stones, etc.
  1. It gave us knowledge about pre-history and material culture of the past.
  1. It has helped in creating proper awareness of our true cultural selves.
  1. It has helped in establishing our roots.

LIMITATIONS OF ARCHAEOLOGY TO THE GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT OF NIGERIA SOCIALIZATION

  1. It was based on guess work.
  1. Archaeology is expensive and capital intensive.
  1. Dating method used may be unreliable.
  1. It cannot give information on immaterial culture.
