Influence of truancy on academic performance in business studies of JSS3 students in AkwaIbom. This study sought to investigate deviant behaviours and academic performance in business studies of secondary school students in Ikot Abasi Local Government Area.
Discussion of Findings
Table 1 that there is a significant difference in academic performance of students who are truants and those who are not truants in Business Studies in Secondary Schools in Ikot Abasi Local Government Area. This study is in agreement with the finding of Geo–opah (2003) who discovered that truants, due to their absence from school usually repeat classes and even when they are repeating, they do not feel better because they feel they are overqualified or too accomplished for such a class. Though, few of them (truants) manage to struggle through school, majority of them usually drop out of school if some form of interventions are not taken. Their level of achievement is generally low because of their lack of interest in learning. Most truants tend to view schooling as a form of punishment, while others attend classes just to please their parents and guardians. Students who skip schooling will most likely be unable to meet up with the curriculum set for them by the school. Thus, the impact of truant behavior on academic achievement overall scoring and performance of these students tend to be low.

This finding also conformed to Oluremi (2013) who asserted based on his study that there is a positive relationship between truancy and Academic Performance of secondary school students in southwestern Nigeria. The study showed that indeed truancy had significant effects on the academic achievement of the students in the area.
Table 2 above indicates that there is a significant difference in academic performance of students who abuse drugs differ from those who do not abuse drugs in Business Studies in Secondary Schools in Ikot Abasi Local Government Area. This study confirms the finding of Hawkins, Calatano and Miler (2012) who had research and concluded that low level of commitment to education and higher truancy rates appear to be related to substance use among adolescents. Again drugs abused affect the brain, this result in major decline in the functions carried out by the brain.
This also conformed to the assertion of Lamb, (2019) that drug abuse is a matter of grave consideration or attention to educational stakeholders and other professionals in various disciplines. Drug abuse is a local, national and international sensitive challenge that needs urgent attention due to the alarming rate of involvement of youth. It is imperative now, that the war against crime in society should start with fighting the use of drugs by our youths as people were likely to be law abiding and avoid crime if they were prevented from drugs abuse.
