The Management of Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Awka, through the College of Postgraduate Studies (CPGS), has announced a major financial relief package for postgraduate students by approving a 50% tuition fee waiver for eligible overstayed candidates.
The decision forms part of a special amnesty programme approved by the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ugochukwu Bond Stanley Anyaehie, to support affected students and encourage them to successfully complete their postgraduate programmes.
According to an internal memorandum dated May 18, 2026, the tuition waiver was approved during the University’s 102nd Board Meeting held on March 24, 2026.
The initiative is designed to reduce financial pressure on postgraduate students who have exceeded the normal duration of their programmes while creating an opportunity for them to regularise their academic status and graduate.
The announcement has generated positive reactions among postgraduate students and education stakeholders, especially at a time when many students continue to face financial challenges.
What the UNIZIK 50% Tuition Fee Amnesty Means
Under the approved arrangement, eligible overstayed postgraduate students will receive a 50% reduction in tuition obligations covering the overstay period.
This means affected students will only pay half of the tuition fees owed during the period beyond the approved duration of their programme.
The University explained that the waiver applies specifically to tuition fees and does not automatically extend to other institutional charges.
Students are therefore advised to carefully review their financial records and outstanding obligations before proceeding.
Eligibility Requirements for the UNIZIK Postgraduate Tuition Waiver
To qualify for the amnesty programme, students must satisfy the following conditions:
- Applicant must be a postgraduate student of Nnamdi Azikiwe University.
- Student must have exceeded the approved duration of the programme.
- All school fees must have been fully paid up to the maximum official duration of study.
- The 50% waiver applies only to tuition accumulated during the overstay period.
- Students must complete all necessary academic and administrative requirements before the deadline.
The University emphasized that only students who meet the stated conditions will benefit from the programme.
Duration of the Amnesty Programme
According to the University management, the tuition relief programme remains open only until the end of the 2025/2026 academic session.
Students are therefore encouraged to act immediately and avoid waiting until the final days of the exercise.
Failure to take advantage of the waiver within the approved period may result in students becoming fully responsible for outstanding tuition obligations.
Why the Tuition Waiver Is Important
For many postgraduate students, financial limitations often contribute to delays in thesis completion, dissertation submission, project defence, and final clearance.
The 50% waiver is expected to reduce that burden and increase completion rates across postgraduate programmes.
Education observers have also described the initiative as a student-support strategy that aligns with efforts to improve postgraduate completion outcomes and reduce abandoned academic programmes.
Students who qualify are encouraged to contact the College of Postgraduate Studies for clarification regarding payment schedules, documentation requirements, and final processing procedures.
Important Advice to Eligible Students
Postgraduate candidates who intend to benefit from the amnesty should:
- Confirm their academic status.
- Review outstanding tuition balances.
- Visit the College of Postgraduate Studies portal.
- Complete all administrative requirements.
- Meet all submission deadlines.
The University reiterated that the opportunity is temporary and encouraged eligible students not to delay.
This latest development reflects UNIZIK’s continued efforts to create a more flexible and supportive academic environment for postgraduate students.
