Zamfara State Governor, Dauda Lawal, has inaugurated new governing councils and boards for six state-owned tertiary institutions, marking a significant step in his administration’s efforts to revitalize the educational sector in the state.
The newly inaugurated councils and boards will oversee the management of the following institutions: Zamfara State University Talata Mafara, Abdu Gusau Polytechnic Talata Mafara, College of Education Maru, College of Nursing and Midwifery Gusau, College of Health Sciences and Technology Tsafe, and College of Agriculture and Animal Science Bakura.
According to a statement released by the Governor’s spokesperson, Sulaiman Bala Idris, the constitution of the councils and boards follows the adoption of a government white paper on the reports of visitation panels. These reports thoroughly assessed the state-owned tertiary educational institutions, providing a detailed evaluation of their current status and challenges.
Governor Lawal, in his remarks, emphasized that the inauguration of the new councils and boards represents a milestone in his administration’s commitment to rescuing the state’s educational sector from decline. He noted that the new governing bodies are expected to significantly improve the management and administration of the state’s tertiary institutions, ushering in a new era of academic excellence.
Lawal further highlighted the measures his government has taken over the past 20 months to address the issues within the educational sector. These include the reconstruction, rehabilitation, and furnishing of primary, secondary, and tertiary institutions, as well as the settlement of outstanding examination fees for WAEC and NECO. His administration has also ensured the payment of salary, pension, and gratuity arrears for civil servants, including teachers.
The Governor emphasized that the newly appointed chairmen and members of the governing councils possess vast knowledge and experience in the education sector, with a proven track record of integrity. He expressed confidence that the new councils will rise to the challenges ahead and help address the funding and management issues facing the state’s tertiary institutions.
“The government and the good people of Zamfara State place high expectations on you, and there is no doubt that you are well-suited for this crucial assignment,” Governor Lawal stated.
