In a bid to improve educational outcomes and foster environmental awareness, the Ministry of Education, in collaboration with UNICEF, has launched the fourth phase of its remedial education program for the 2024-2025 academic year. This initiative, which has already impacted 7,857 students and 776 teachers, focuses on enhancing Arabic language skills for early-stage students while simultaneously promoting environmental stewardship through the Green Schools Initiative.
The remedial classes are specifically designed to boost students’ proficiency in Arabic, focusing on listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills. A key component of this phase is improving students’ pronunciation, laying the groundwork for stronger academic performance in other subjects. This is part of a broader effort to ensure that students are well-equipped with a solid foundation in their native language, which is crucial for their academic and personal development. To make learning more interactive, 22 schools have been upgraded with state-of-the-art classrooms, including reading corners furnished with round tables, reading books, and interactive learning materials. Digital resources have also been integrated into the classrooms to enrich the educational experience.
Alongside the academic efforts, the Green Schools Initiative is empowering students to become environmental advocates. UNICEF has equipped 88 schools with greening tools and seedlings, encouraging students to engage actively with nature. This initiative aims to raise awareness about environmental preservation, promote afforestation, and instil a culture of sustainability among the students. Through hands-on activities like planting trees and learning about environmental care, students are not only gaining academic skills but are also strengthening their bond with the environment. These activities are designed to instill a sense of responsibility for the planet, ensuring that the next generation is aware of the importance of preserving natural resources.
The initiative is supported by Education Cannot Wait, an organization dedicated to ensuring that all children, especially the most vulnerable, have access to quality education. This collaboration emphasizes the importance of integrating academic improvement with environmental education, equipping students to face both educational and ecological challenges in the future. Since 2012, UNICEF has been committed to advancing the rights and wellbeing of children and their families in Libya. Working alongside its partners, UNICEF has been able to reach children in every corner of the country, providing support in areas such as health, nutrition, education, and child protection. The organization’s efforts are particularly focused on reaching vulnerable, conflict-affected children, ensuring that no child is left behind.
