JAMB Exam: 7 Important Things You Must Know Before Exam Day

David TodiBy David TodiJanuary 16, 2025No Comments5 Mins Read

As the JAMB (Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board) Computer-Based Test (CBT) draws near, it is essential for all candidates to be fully prepared. The JAMB exam is a critical step for anyone seeking admission into Nigerian universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education. With 2025 JAMB around the corner, here are 7 important things you must know before exam day to ensure you’re fully ready and confident. This comprehensive guide is designed to help you understand key aspects of the exam, so you don’t face any surprises on the big day.

1. Know Your Exam Date, Time, and Venue

One of the first things you must know is the exact date, time, and venue of your exam. The JAMB exam is often held in multiple sessions across different centers. If you’re unsure of your exam details, it’s vital that you visit the official JAMB portal or check your email for your exam slip. Be sure to print out your slip ahead of time, as it contains all the necessary information, including your seat number.

To avoid unnecessary stress, plan your travel route ahead of time. Confirm how long it will take to reach your exam center, and aim to arrive at least an hour before the scheduled time. This will give you enough time to calm your nerves and ensure you’re not rushing at the last minute.

2. Get Familiar with the JAMB CBT Format

The JAMB exam is now fully computerized (CBT), meaning you will be using a computer to answer your questions. Many candidates, especially those who have never used a computer before, find this aspect of the exam intimidating. To avoid any confusion or stress during the exam, take some time to familiarize yourself with the CBT format.

There are plenty of resources, including mock exams and practice tests, that simulate the JAMB CBT format. These practice tests will give you a feel of the real exam, from navigating the computer interface to answering questions in the allotted time. The more you practice, the more comfortable you will be on exam day.

3. Understand the Exam Structure

Knowing the structure of the JAMB exam will give you an edge. The JAMB exam consists of 4 subjects (for most candidates), and each subject is divided into multiple-choice questions (MCQs). You’ll be given a set amount of time to answer all the questions, which vary in difficulty.

The key subjects include:

  • Use of English (compulsory for all candidates)
  • Mathematics (for science and commercial students)
  • Sciences or Arts Subjects (depending on your chosen course of study)

It is essential to know the number of questions in each subject and how much time you’ll have to complete them. This will help you pace yourself effectively during the exam.

4. Review the JAMB Syllabus

The JAMB syllabus is a comprehensive guide that outlines the topics you need to study for each subject. It provides a breakdown of the key concepts, theories, and formulas you’ll encounter during the exam. Familiarize yourself with the syllabus and ensure you cover all the topics listed.

Incorporating the syllabus into your study schedule will help you stay organized and focused. Avoid cramming and instead focus on understanding each topic. This will give you a better chance of answering questions accurately and confidently on exam day.

5. Prepare Your Required Documents

Before heading to the exam hall, ensure you have all the required documents. These typically include:

  • Your JAMB exam slip (with your exam details)
  • A valid identification card (National ID, driver’s license, or passport)
  • Passport-sized photographs (in case you need them for verification)
  • COVID-19 prevention materials (such as a face mask and hand sanitizer if required)

It’s always a good idea to double-check your documents the night before the exam. Forgetting one crucial item can delay your entry or cause problems on exam day.

6. Plan Your Sleep and Nutrition the Night Before

On the eve of the exam, it’s important to prioritize your physical and mental well-being. Get a good night’s sleep — at least 7 to 8 hours — so you’re fully rested and alert on exam day. Try to avoid staying up late revising last-minute materials, as this can leave you feeling exhausted and stressed.

Eat a balanced meal the morning of the exam, one that will give you sustained energy. Avoid heavy or greasy foods that may make you feel sluggish. Hydrate properly but avoid drinking too much water just before entering the exam hall to prevent unnecessary bathroom breaks.

7. Stay Calm and Confident

Finally, on the exam day, it’s essential to stay calm and confident. It’s normal to feel some anxiety, but don’t let it overwhelm you. Take deep breaths, and remember that preparation is key. Trust in your study efforts, and approach each question calmly and logically. If you encounter a difficult question, move on to the next one and come back to it later. There’s no need to panic — every question is an opportunity to showcase your knowledge.

If you follow these tips, you will be in a much stronger position to succeed in your JAMB exam. Proper preparation and the right mindset will go a long way in ensuring that you perform at your best.

Good luck as you prepare for the 2025 JAMB exam! Stay confident, stay focused, and give it your best effort!
