The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has announced that exceptional candidates under the age of 16 will be allowed to sit for the 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME). This decision marks a shift from the previous policy that barred candidates below 16 from participating in the examination, regardless of their academic capabilities.
JAMB’s Registrar disclosed that the exemption is aimed at recognizing and supporting academically gifted students who have demonstrated outstanding intellectual capacity. The board emphasized that such candidates must meet specific criteria to qualify for the exemption, including proof of exceptional academic performance and a recommendation from their school authorities.
The move has been welcomed by education stakeholders who believe it will encourage talented students to pursue higher education without unnecessary delays. Many have argued that age should not be a limiting factor for students who are ready for university education, especially those who have completed their secondary school studies ahead of their peers.
However, some experts have expressed concerns about the psychological and social preparedness of younger students for university life. They caution that while academic brilliance is important, universities must also consider the emotional maturity of candidates who will be placed in learning environments with much older peers.
JAMB has assured that measures will be put in place to ensure that only truly deserving candidates benefit from the exemption. The board also reiterated its commitment to upholding high educational standards while promoting inclusivity and fairness in Nigeria’s admission process.
