The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has reiterated that scoring high in the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) does not automatically guarantee admission into universities, polytechnics, or colleges of education in Nigeria. The board emphasized that admission processes involve multiple criteria beyond UTME scores, urging candidates to understand the full requirements set by their preferred institutions.
JAMB’s Registrar explained that while a high UTME score is important, other factors such as post-UTME screening, O’Level results, departmental cut-off marks, and quota systems play crucial roles in determining admission eligibility. He stressed that universities and polytechnics have autonomy in setting additional admission criteria, including merit, catchment area considerations, and special admission policies for disadvantaged regions.
The board also warned against fraudulent claims by individuals who promise admission based solely on UTME scores. It cautioned candidates to be wary of admission racketeers, advising them to follow due process and verify information directly from JAMB and their chosen institutions.
Education experts have backed JAMB’s stance, stating that a holistic admission process ensures that candidates are adequately prepared for tertiary education. They also emphasized the importance of ensuring that all students meet minimum subject requirements and institutional guidelines.
With the 2025 admission cycle approaching, JAMB has urged applicants to stay updated with official announcements, emphasizing that transparency and fairness remain the board’s top priorities.
