Content | WOODWORK PROJECT
Woodwork projects involves the use of various materials such as table, chairs, shelves, cupboard, beds etc. Glues, Abrasives, Screws, Nails, Hinges, Locks and Fittings etc. There are three (3) stages that are involved in the process of woodwork projects: I) The Design Stage II) The Drawing Stage III) The Fabrication Stage WOODWORK JOINT. These are the methods used to assemble and fasten two or more pieces of wood together by gluing without nailing. When preparing pieces of wood for gluing, they must be cleaned and dried. TYPES AND USES OF WOODWORK JOINTS. 1. Cross Having Joint: This is used for joining two horizontal members together such as frames of photographs. Glues are also applied to hold parts together. 2. Mortise and Tenon Joint: This is the strongest form of wood joint connection. The Mortise is placed at the centre and the Tenon is one-third of its thickness of wood used. It is used in frame construction. 3. Butt Joint: This is used where vertical and horizontal members are joined together by making use of glue. 4. Tongue and Groove Joint: It does not form permanent part of the joint. This is used where fracture is likely to occur. 5. Angle Lap Joint: This is the joint used in box construction. E.g shelves, drawers e.t.c 6. Mitre Joint: This is used in photo framing and cabinet works. Each piece of the wood is cut at an angle 450 and the two edges are joined together by gluing. 7. Dove Tail Joint: This used in furniture making. It produces a very good and testing joint. This is the strongest form of joint used in cabinet construction. 8. Widening Joint: This is used for joining edges in other to produce a wider board. 9. Bridle Joint: This is a simplified form of mortise and tenon joint with increased bending surfaces. |
Guided practice | 1. What is joint? 2. Outline 5 types of joint 3. state where each of the (2) above can be used |
Independent practice | 1. Sketch each of the types of joint |
Day 2 | Two |
Sub-topic | Adhesives and abrasives |
Objective | By end of the lesson the students should be able to: 1. Define adhesive and state its uses 2. Define abrasive and it’s uses |

Content | ADHESIVES. An adhesive is any substance, which is capable of holding or bonding two other pieces of materials together. They are normally called glue. TYPES OF ADHESIVES There are three (3) types of Adhesives: 1) Protein Adhesives: These are made from plant or animal protein. They are available as: Hide glue, Casein protein, and Vegetable protein. 2) Synthetic Adhesives: These are made from formaldehyde resin or expoxy resins. These are used on a variety of joining work together ranging from decorative cabinets to plywood manufacture and boat building. 3) Contact Adhesives: These are made from synthetic rubber materials; they are used as evostic or super glue. ABRASIVES. An Abrasive is a paper or cloth coated with hard material such as sand, which can wear away the surface of other materials by rubbing. E.g Sand paper. The abrasive used for both hard and machine sanding is called Garnet |
GUIDED PRACTICE | 1. What is adhesives. 2. state the use of adhesives. 3. Define abrasive |
INDEPENDENT PRACTICE | 1. Stat and explain types of adhesives |
