1. This paper consists of two sections: Section A (Objective) and Section B (Essay).
2. Section A contains 60 objective questions. Answer ALL questions. Time: 40 minutes.
3. Section B contains 6 essay questions. Answer any FOUR (4) questions. Time: 1 hour 40 minutes.
4. Total marks obtainable: 100 (60 marks for Section A and 40 marks for Section B).

2. Rubuta wasika zuwa ga Shugaban Makarantarku kana neman izinin hutu saboda rashin lafiya. (Write a letter to your school principal requesting permission for sick leave.) (10 marks)
3. Karanta wannan labarin sannan ka amsa tambayoyin da ke biye da shi.
“Ali yaro ne mai shekara goma. Yana zaune a garin Kano tare da iyalinsa. Kowace safe, yakan tashi da wuri ya wanke fuskarsa sannan ya je makaranta. Malaminsa mai suna Malam Musa yana koya masa karatu da rubutu. Ali yana son karatu sosai kuma yana burin zama likita nan gaba.”

6. Bayyana ma’anar karin magana biyu masu zuwa tare da darasin da ake koya daga garesu: (a) Hakuri maganin duniya (b) Rashin sani ya fi dare duhu. (Explain the meaning of the following two proverbs, along with the lesson learnt from each.) (10 marks)
SECTION B MARKING GUIDE (ESSAY)
Each question carries 10 marks. Award marks as guided below, giving credit for any other correct and relevant point, translation, or content not listed.
Question 1
Award marks based on the following criteria, applicable to a well-organised Hausa composition:
Introduction (2 marks): The candidate should open by stating clearly what education is and why the topic matters.
Body/content (4 marks): The candidate should discuss relevant points such as: ilimi yana bunkasa tunanin dan Adam (education develops human thinking); ilimi yana samar da damar aikin yi (education creates job opportunities); ilimi yana taimakawa wajen inganta lafiya da tattalin arziki (education helps improve health and the economy); ilimi yana rage jahilci a cikin al’umma (education reduces ignorance in society). Award marks for any well-explained, relevant points, whether from this list or other valid ones.
Organisation and language (3 marks): Award marks for logical paragraphing, correct use of Hausa sentence structure, and appropriate vocabulary.
Conclusion (1 mark): The candidate should end with a summary statement or recommendation on the importance of education.
Question 2
Award marks based on the standard format and content expected of a formal letter, adapted to Hausa letter-writing convention:
Heading and address (2 marks): Candidate’s address and the date should be correctly placed at the top.
Recipient and salutation (2 marks): The letter should be addressed appropriately to the Shugaban Makaranta (school principal) with a suitable opening greeting.
Body of the letter (4 marks): The candidate should clearly state the reason for writing (illness), the specific request (permission for leave), and relevant details such as the expected duration of absence, all expressed in clear, polite Hausa.
Closing and signature (2 marks): The letter should end with an appropriate closing statement and the candidate’s signature/name.
Question 3
(a) Ali yana da shekara goma (Ali is ten years old). (2 marks)
(b) Ali yana zaune a garin Kano (Ali lives in Kano town). (2 marks)
(c) Malaminsa shi ne Malam Musa (His teacher is Malam Musa), kuma yana koya masa karatu da rubutu (and he teaches him reading and writing). Award 1.5 marks for correctly naming the teacher and 1.5 marks for correctly stating what is taught.
(d) Burin Ali na gaba shi ne ya zama likita (Ali’s future ambition is to become a doctor). (3 marks)
Question 4
Award 2 marks for each correctly translated sentence, accepting minor acceptable variations in wording that preserve the correct meaning:
(a) Rana tana haskakawa.
(b) Ina zuwa makaranta.
(c) Ta sayi littafi.
(d) Muna cin shinkafa.
(e) Shi yaro ne mai kyau / Shi yaro nagari ne.
Question 5
Award marks for correctly listing the Hausa personal pronouns with an example sentence for each (any five at 2 marks each, or full credit for a well-organised complete list with examples):
1. Ni (I), e.g. Ni dalibi ne (I am a student).
2. Kai/Ke (you, masculine/feminine singular), e.g. Kai malami ne (You are a teacher, to a male); Ke yarinya ce (You are a girl, to a female).
3. Shi/Ita (he/she), e.g. Shi likita ne (He is a doctor); Ita malama ce (She is a female teacher).
4. Mu (we), e.g. Mu dalibai ne (We are students).
5. Ku (you, plural), e.g. Ku yara ne (You are children).
6. Su (they), e.g. Su ma’aikata ne (They are workers).
Award full marks for a correct and reasonably complete treatment of the pronoun set, even where the examples given differ from those above.
Question 6
(a) ‘Hakuri maganin duniya’ (5 marks): Literal/general meaning, patience is the remedy or cure for the troubles of the world (2 marks). Lesson: the proverb teaches that a person who remains patient in the face of life’s difficulties is better able to overcome them, and that patience is a valuable virtue in dealing with the challenges of life (3 marks).
(b) ‘Rashin sani ya fi dare duhu’ (5 marks): Literal/general meaning, lack of knowledge (ignorance) is darker/worse than the darkness of night (2 marks). Lesson: the proverb teaches that ignorance can be more dangerous and damaging to a person than physical darkness, and it encourages the pursuit of knowledge and education (3 marks).
