The Lagos State Government has taken a significant step towards modernizing the education system by collaborating with two private firms, Kelv Consult and Classbox Educational Hub Limited, to introduce smart classrooms in state-owned schools. This partnership aims to enhance the teaching and learning experience by integrating digital tools and devices in both urban and underserved communities.
Through the collaboration, Kelv Consult will provide secondary school students from junior to senior levels with essential skills in computer programming, web designing, cyber security, and data analysis. Meanwhile, Classbox will equip teachers with customized digital devices containing useful learning materials, transforming the way lessons are delivered.
At the pilot phase of the partnership, held on Friday, the State’s Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Mr. Jamiu Alli-Balogun, emphasized the importance of digital classrooms and resources in improving educational outcomes across the state. Represented by Mrs. Grace Akinfoyewa, Director of ICT, the commissioner highlighted the state’s commitment to offering quality education to all students, regardless of their location or socio-economic background.
Alli-Balogun noted that the integration of digital devices and resources not only aids in delivering educational content but also fosters an ecosystem where both teachers and students benefit from enhanced teaching tools. He further emphasized that the training students receive in soft skills, coupled with the provision of digital devices to teachers, would significantly boost the learning and teaching environment in Lagos.
The commissioner urged teachers and students to embrace this new approach and make the most of the technology at their disposal. He expressed optimism that the project would have a lasting impact on the educational sector in Lagos and inspire students to achieve more.
A key feature of the initiative is the “Classroom without Borders” device, provided by Classbox. The device is designed to offer a fully integrated learning experience with multiple features, including a mini-projector, whiteboard, tablet, visualizer, speaker, and a battery that can last for two or more days when fully charged—ideal for areas with frequent power outages. It also contains curriculum-based content, allowing for more interactive and flexible teaching, especially in remote areas.
During the event, Mr. Durojaye Banji, the Chief Operating Officer and Co-founder of Classbox Hub, praised the partnership, emphasizing the value of digital skills in today’s workforce. He commended the Lagos State Government for leading the way in educational innovation, setting an example for other states in Nigeria.
The event also featured a competition where schools presented digital projects. The winners, including Government Senior College, Agege, Gbaja Boys’ Senior High School, Surulere, and Kuramo Senior College, Victoria Island, received prizes to further support their educational efforts.
The partnership has been lauded by both students and teachers, with many expressing their gratitude for the opportunity to enhance their skills and prepare for future challenges in the digital world.
