The House of Representatives Public Accounts Committee has recommended the exclusion of several Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs), including the University of Ibadan (UI) and the National Examinations Council (NECO), from the 2025 national budget. This proposal follows concerns regarding the failure of these agencies to account for previous budgetary allocations and internally generated revenues.
The committee, which is responsible for examining government expenditures, expressed dissatisfaction over the consistent inability of these MDAs to provide satisfactory reports on how funds were utilized. The decision to exclude them is part of a broader effort to streamline public expenditure and ensure accountability in the use of taxpayer money.
The House has instructed the affected agencies to submit comprehensive reports on their financial activities and management to resolve the issues. Failure to comply with these requirements could potentially result in the continued exclusion from future budget allocations.
This move has sparked debates on the transparency and efficiency of public sector agencies in managing funds, especially those involved in national education and exams, like NECO.
