Instructions to Candidates
- This paper tests your practical musicianship: performance, sight-reading, aural perception, and rhythmic accuracy.
- The paper is in four sections: Section A (Solo Performance), Section B (Sight-Reading), Section C (Aural Tests), and Section D (Rhythm and Sight-Singing).
- Candidates must come with their own instrument (or use voice) and be prepared to perform a piece of their choice within the required grade level.
- Each candidate will be examined individually by the practical examiner.
- Total time allowed: approximately 15–20 minutes per candidate.

SECTION A: SOLO PERFORMANCE
Instruction to candidate: Perform one prepared piece on your chosen instrument or voice, not exceeding four minutes.
Question 1: State the title, composer, and grade level of the piece you are about to perform. Model Answer: The piece I will perform is “Highlife Serenade,” an intermediate-level piece for guitar, arranged for the purpose of this examination. It is set at Grade 3 standard.
Question 2: What is the tempo marking of your piece, and what does it mean? Model Answer: The tempo marking is Moderato, which means the piece should be played at a moderate, walking pace, not too fast and not too slow.
Question 3: Identify one technical challenge in the piece and how you overcame it in practice. Model Answer: The piece contains a rapid scale passage in the third bar. I overcame this by practising it slowly with a metronome before gradually increasing the speed.
SECTION B: SIGHT-READING
Instruction to candidate: You will be given one minute to study the short passage below. Then perform it on your instrument.
Sample Sight-Reading Passage (Description for Examiner Use)
A simple eight-bar melody in C major, 4/4 time, using crotchets, quavers, and one dotted minim, within a one-octave range (C to C).
Question 1: Before you play, what key is this passage in, and how do you know? Model Answer: The passage is in C major because there are no sharps or flats in the key signature.
Question 2: What is the time signature, and what does it tell you? Model Answer: The time signature is 4/4, which tells me there are four beats in each bar and the crotchet receives one beat.
SECTION C: AURAL TESTS
Instruction to candidate: Listen carefully to what the examiner plays and answer accordingly.
Question 1: (Examiner plays two notes.) Is the interval you heard a third or a fifth? Model Answer: The interval I heard is a third.
Question 2: (Examiner plays a short chord progression.) Was the final chord major or minor? Model Answer: The final chord was minor.
Question 3: (Examiner claps a short rhythm.) Clap back the rhythm you just heard. Model Answer: (Candidate claps the four-beat rhythm accurately, matching the pattern demonstrated.)
Question 4: (Examiner plays a short melodic phrase.) Sing back the phrase using “la” or solfa. Model Answer: (Candidate sings the phrase back using doh-re-mi-fa-soh solfa syllables, matching pitch accurately.)
SECTION D: RHYTHM AND SIGHT-SINGING
Instruction to candidate: Study the four-bar rhythm pattern for thirty seconds, then clap or tap it in strict time.

Four bars in 3/4 time featuring crotchets, a dotted crotchet-quaver pair, and a bar of rest.
Question 1: How many beats are in each bar of this pattern? Model Answer: There are three beats in each bar, since the time signature is 3/4.
Question 2: Sight-sing the given four-bar melodic extract using solfa names. Model Answer: (Candidate sings doh-re-mi-fa / soh-fa-mi-re / doh-mi-soh-doh / doh, in strict time and correct pitch relationship.)
